According to recent reports, Lebanon is about to be placed on the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) grey list. The FATF is concerned about the lack of AML measures. If a country is included on the grey list, it could have a significant impact on the country's financial stability. Grey-listed countries are subject to heightened supervision by the FATF.
Financial institutions are urged to carry out extra due diligence on activities with parties from Lebanon, given the increased risk of money laundering. Lebanon has been struggling with a financial crisis since 2019 which affects not only the country, but also the deal with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
More clarity on the FATF's decision is expected to follow next week.
